Illegal Greek websites closed after series of Police raids

Athens - Greek police officers have secured the closure of a number of illegal websites following a series of raids across the country. The unlicensed services, such as thegreekz.com, were major sources of illegal music, movies, games and software in the country. The police action followed a series of complaints by rights holders.

The raids took place in Athens, Kavala and Florina, with five individuals arrested on suspicion of violating Greek copyright law.  Officers from the departments of electronic crime in the Athens and Thessaloniki police departments were accompanied by prosecutors in the raids and seized a significant amount of equipment and documentation.

It is estimated that thegreekz.com and other sites operated by the same administrators were attracting around 15 million visits daily.  The documentation seized suggested that the operators had generated more than €230,000 through advertising and subscription fees charged to access the sites.

INTERPOL is working with police forces in other countries to coordinate investigations into additional suspects involved in the case.
